Paul VERLAINE. School transcript, partly autograph. 1878-187 - Lot 37
Paul VERLAINE. School transcript, partly autograph. 1878-1879. 13 double-sided printed sheets filled in with brown ink in soft cover. After the Rimbaldian adventure, Paul Verlaine sought to find a stable situation. Having learned from Ernest Delahaye that the latter had given up a position as repetiteur at the Notre-Dame institution in Rethel, Verlaine applied and was admitted in October 1877. He taught literature, history, geography and English until the end of July 1879, when he was dismissed for leading some of his pupils to drink in cabarets. It was at Notre-Dame de Rethel that he met Lucien Létinois, his pupil, for whom he developed a paternal passion mixed with equivocal feelings, leading to the teenager's spiritual education, the company of his parents, the purchase of a farm in their name financed by Verlaine's mother, and the disastrous management leading to bankruptcy and the flight of the Létinois family to Belgium. The notebook consists of 13 printed sheets (out of 14, the twelfth having been cut off in the margin) with columns for pupils' names, notes for conduct, lessons, homework, observations, etc. The sheets are entirely filled in by hand. The sheets are filled out entirely in brown ink and contain, from October 11, 1878 to January 31, 1879, the results of eighteen compositions in spelling, history, recitation, geography, but also arithmetic, geometry, drawing, religious instruction... subjects that Verlaine did not teach. The name of the pupil Létinois appears sixteen times. The handwriting is very fine, regular and legible, in short, very scholastic. It's hard to say that the entire notebook was written by Verlaine, but his handwriting is often found in capital letters. It is likely that this notebook was filled out by several hands, probably by the teachers of each subject. The cover, which bears a small handwritten label on the front cover, is split at the spine.
