BSA - Lot 47
BSA Moto Gold Star 1938 Serial number 322 Type : JM24 Engine no. 388 Copy of normal registration document The motorcycle presented here has an engine number higher than the production one, yet it seems correct. It's in perfect condition, but will need to be restarted. Our collector acquired it in 1979 and it has 4241 km on the odometer. Based very closely on the 500 cm3 M23 Empire Star, first produced in 1937, the 1938 Gold Star production model shared most of the cycle parts of the earlier model, with the exception of the frame, which was built from lighter Reynolds 531. The fuel tank, which was unique to the Gold Star in that it had a toolbox integrated into the top section, instead of the dashboard, and the rear brake drum, which sported fine fins around its diameter. The ammeter and light switch were housed in a panel in the headlight shell. The other main visible differences were the all-alloy engine with integrated connecting rod tunnel, TT carburetor and "Elektron" gearbox housings. The M24 also had a small tubular oil pressure gauge mounted above the timing case, in place of an indicator knob in the upper dashboard of the M23's tank. The first production M24s, bearing engine and chassis numbers starting at 101 and prefixed JM24, were built in November/December 1937, and the first batch of 10 was shipped on December 17. Production of the 1938 Gold Stars continued until the autumn of 1938, when the factory switched to production of the new 1939 model. In all, some 266 1938 JM24 motorcycles were built, and of these, 85 were shipped to destinations outside the UK.
