LINTO - Lot 40
LINTO Motorcycle Grand Prix 500 cc 4-stroke horizontal twin 1968 Frame no. 848 The bike presented here has been authenticated as the one that was runner-up in the World Championship with Hungarian-born Swiss rider Gyula MARSOVSZKY. The welded crankcase is clearly visible, having been broken during a Grand Prix and repaired at the Bern Technical School. This historic motorcycle, with its incredible track record, was sent to Italy for restoration. The engine was rebuilt by Fabrizio ANDRIOLO at MORO, with the necessary modifications to make it more reliable, then the chassis was checked and tuned at MACHERONI, whose boss is the son of Ezio MACHERONI, who was in charge of the racing department at Aermacchi at the time. The bike has only taken part in a few demonstrations since then. It just needs a tune-up. After starting his career with Mondial and Bianchi, one of the most famous and prolific Italian technicians of the post-war period, Lino TONTI set out in the mid-1960s to remedy the shortage of 500 cm3 bikes for private pilots. He began to design and build a "customer competition" bike, to which he gave the name of his first twin-shaft 75 cm3 in 1949: the Linto. It was built on the basis of two Aermacchi 250s coupled together. Unveiled at the end of 1967, it was tuned by Alberto PAGANI and took second place in the 1968 East German Grand Prix. In 1969, MARSOVSKY finished runner-up to the untouchable MV, while PAGANI won a Grand Prix in Ago's absence. The engine develops 61 hp at 9800 rpm, with a 6-speed gearbox and a top speed of 240 km/h. Legend has it that in England, the Linto was capable of 290 km/h!
