Pierre-Paul Prud?hon (1758-1823) - Lot 35
[221 x 298]. Goncourt 4 (v/vi). Très belle épreuve. Petites ondulations très légèrement frottées en surface. Grandes marges du cuivre. «Prud'hon chose an evocative moment in Bernard's poem, though what he made of it contained much more eroticism than Bernard's didactic style would admit to...] Prudhon's Phrosine and Mélidore is an imaginative interpretation of a romantic literary theme in an individualized style which is both anachronistic and anticipatory. As such, it summarizes the character of this artist so misunderstood by David.» (J. M. Fisher, in Regency to Empire, French Printmaking 1715-1814, The Baltimore Museum of Art and The Minneapolis Institute of Arts, 1984, p. 311-312)
