BACK TO THE FUTURE PART II - Lot 35
BACK TO THE FUTURE PART II (1989) - BACK TO THE FUTURE 2 (1989) Original prototype of Griff's futuristic mask originally planned by the production team From the personal collection of John Bell, the film's visual effects director, then working for the renowned special effects company Industrial Light & Magic, this prototype mask reflects a darker initial version of the 2015 future imagined for Back to the Future II. It's made from a variety of materials, including leather, wool and metal elements. Indeed, the futuristic world originally presented to Robert Zemeckis and Steven Spielberg was much darker than the one finally brought to the screen. Costume designer Joanna Johnston had designed a series of costumes for Griff's gang, including this mask intended to be worn by Tom Wilson as Griff. After examining the sketches and costumes, the production finally decided to orient the film towards a brighter, more colorful future, as we know it today. This mask is one of the last reminders of that "dark future". Originally envisaged as a gift from Joanna Johnston to John Bell. Dimensions: approx. 30 cm high. Deliberately worn, soiled and aged during production to match the dark future for which it was intended (cf. photos). ____________________ Original prototype of Griff's futuristic mask initially planned for the production From the personal collection of John Bell, the film's visual effects art director, then working at the renowned special effects company Industrial Light & Magic, this prototype mask reflects an earlier, darker version of the 2015 future imagined for Back to the Future Part II. Intentionally worn, dirtied, and aged during production To match the dark-future aesthetic for which it was designed (See photos).
