Guillaume APOLLINAIRE. Le Bestiaire ou Cortège d'Orphée. Corrected proofs. [Paris, Deplanche,1910-1911]. In-4, purple purple suede cut and openwork on the first cover on a turquoise basane background reproducing an inner wood by Dufy representing the peacock, author's name and title of the work in turquoise fillets, smooth spine with title in full, printed paper lining and endpapers decorated with black and green fish (Period binding). Monod, I-334 // Talvart, I-79-4.A. Precious set of proofs for Le Bestiaire d'Apollinaire illustrated by Raoul Dufy, accompanied by 13 autograph sheets by the poet, including 12 with sketches. The volume includes a cover with an original gouache composition by Alice Halicka, 2 copies of the prospectus, one with a signed autograph dispatch to Louis Marcoussis, 2 faux-titres, 2 titles, an etching portrait by Marcoussis accompanied by the original drawing, then the complete work printed on fine paper with Dufy's 30 large original woodcuts, including 16 in double state (La Chèvre du Tibet, Le Lion, La Souris, L'Éléphant, La Chenille, La Mouche, La Puce, La Sauterelle, Le Dauphin, Le Poulpe, Les Sirènes, La Colombe, Le Paon, Le Hibou, Ibis et Le Bœuf) and 2 portraits of Orphée in triple state, one with an autograph caption. The volume contains 2 duplicate leaves of text, one with a small correction, 2 states of notes with variants and an corrected colophon, very different from the final colophon. 11 leaves are stamped "Épreuve de l'imprimerie Gauthier-Villars" dated from September 22, 1910 to March 10, 1911. The Hare wood is very different from the final wood, and the Caterpillar wood is printed a quarter turn to the left. The volume contains 13 autograph leaves by Apollinaire, each with a quatrain from the Bestiaire. 12 of these are illustrated with a sketch in the poet's hand (La Tortue, Le Cheval, Le Serpent, Le Chat, Le Lièvre, Le Lapin, Le Dromadaire, Les Méduses, L'Écrevisse, La Carpe, Le Morpion and Le Condor, the last two refused for publication). This precious volume bears on one leaf this ex-dono: A Louis Marcoussis / cet exemplaire singulier / fait de bric et de broc / mi-imprimé / mi-manuscrit / a été donné en très / cordial souvenir par / Guillaume Apollinaire. Spine slightly and unevenly faded. Mottling on several printed leaves; 23 adhesive repairs in the margins, including 3 on the entire lateral margin. Louis Marcoussis (1878-1941), a Polish painter and engraver, naturalized French, was close to Apollinaire and one of the first artists of the Cubist movement. In 1913, he married the painter Alicja Halicka. Provenance: Georges-Emmanuel Lang (1925, no. 233) and André Lefèvre (I, December 8, 1964, no. 7).
