Paul VERLAINE. Dedications. Autograph manuscript signed. 44 - Lot 39
Paul VERLAINE. Dedications. Autograph manuscript signed. 44 leaves in-8 mounted on tabs, cream bradel paper, muted spine (Binding circa 1960). Verlaine's handwritten copy of 41 poems from Dédicaces. The Dédicaces volume is a collection of poetic pieces by Paul Verlaine, with each poem dedicated to one of his friends or acquaintances. The first edition was published in March 1890 by the Bibliothèque Artistique et Littéraire. The volume contained 39 poems, 6 of which had already been published. A second edition was printed by Léon Vanier, in 1894, with 71 additional pieces. The present manuscript contains 41 poems, 37 from the first edition (without the poems to Charles Morice and Edmond Thonier), but with 4 poems from the second edition (poems to Ernest Jaubert, Rodolphe Darzens, Rodolphe Salis and Léon Vanier). The poems are written on the reverse side of sheets printed with Assistance Publique letterhead, except for 5 on squared paper and 2 others on plain paper. They are preceded by a title, a sheet bearing only the title of a poem to Anatole France, and end with a blank sheet. One poem is signed, and two others are dated 1887 and 1889. Several of these leaves are inscribed in a corner, by another hand, "Envoyé d'Aix" (sent from Aix). 9 of these poems have a correction in the poet's hand, 4 to replace a word, 3 to strike out another and 2 corrections that will not be taken into account in the printed version. Paul VERLAINE. Dédicaces. Paris, Léon Vanier, 1894. In-12, paperback. Second edition, considerably enlarged, partly original for 71 poems. It is also the first to be marketed, the original having been sold by subscription. subscription. Faded copy, browned cover with broken spine.
