[Donation Alphonse François, marquis de SADE]. Justine, ou l - Lot 31
[Donation Alphonse François, marquis de SADE]. Justine, ou les malheurs de la vertu. En Hollande, Chez les Libraires Associés (Paris, Girouard), 1791. 2 volumes in-8, basane porphyre, chain framing, nicely decorated smooth spines (period binding?). Dutel, A-593 // Gay, II-752 // Pia, 724 /// I. 283 / A4, B-S8, T2 (with signature error in cahiers A and B) / II. (2f.)-. 191 / [ ]2, A-M8. Very rare first edition of the Marquis de Sade's most important work. This famous novel was written in three different drafts. The first, entitled Les Infortunes de la vertu, was written in 1787 in the Bastille, where the author had been imprisoned in 1784. It is by far the least daring of the three, and is no more than a short story. The second draft, Justine, ou les malheurs de la vertu, was published in 1791, a year after the author's release. In a candid confession, Justine herself recounts her misfortunes, the tortures and horrors she suffers, in the most scurrilous detail, amidst which the heroine remains the embodiment of virtue. The third essay, entitled La Nouvelle Justine ou les malheurs de la vertu, followed by the story of her sister Juliette, appeared in 1797. The much more developed text follows a very different plan, describing the lives of two orphaned sisters, virtuous Justine, who suffers the worst abuse, and Juliette, whose adventures illustrate the prosperity of vice. The edition was published clandestinely by Girouard in Paris. It features an allegorical frontispiece designed by Philippe Chery and engraved by Carrée, as well as a small woodcut title vignette. A fine copy in its original binding. It does not include the explanatory leaf for the frontispiece, of which only three copies are known, including the Rund-Nordmann copy. We are unable to certify the period binding, as there are indications that it may have been produced at a later date. Endpapers renewed. A few patches of repaired leather spotting. Frontispiece repaired at corners, false title and title of volume II torn and restored, repair to last leaf of volume I, one leaf shorter in margin (II, C6), 0.5 and 1.5 cm tear to 2 leaves (I, L8 and 02).
