Nicolas Edme RESTIF DE LA BRETONNE. Les Nuits de Paris, ou L - Lot 25
Nicolas Edme RESTIF DE LA BRETONNE. Les Nuits de Paris, ou Le Spectateur nocturne. London, Paris, s.n., 1788. 8 volumes in 16 parts in-8, paperbacks in delivery covers, modern folders and slipcases. Cohen, 882 // Lacroix, 258 /// (2f.)-2359 (with pagination errors)-(12f.)-564. First edition of Les Nuits de Paris, in which Restif de La Bretonne, walking through Paris at night, describes the abuses he had witnessed: What a sight to see when all eyes are closed! Peaceful citizens, I have kept watch for you; I have run, alone, the nights for you. For you I entered the dens of vice and crime. A work halfway between fiction and memoir, Les Nuits... was a great success, and was copied several times. The first 14 parts are continuously paginated, volumes 15/16 are separately paginated, and the work is illustrated with 18 plates and a fold-out portrait by Binet. Copy with the cartons mentioned by Lacroix for the first 14 volumes and some of those for volume VIII. The copy has been composed from several copies, due to the different colors of the covers. It is enhanced by a color portrait of Madame Contat. Stamp of the Starhemberg princes' library on 5 volumes. Leaves of different sizes with a few angular tears, some browning or stains not serious. Library mark in blue pencil on some volumes. An isolated volume of another edition is enclosed.
