[Nicolas Edme RESTIF DE LA BRETONNE].Monsieur-Nicolas; ou Le Cœur-humain dévoilé. Publié par lui-même. First edition of the first ten parts of Restif de La Bretonne's autobiography, which would normally comprise sixteen parts. Restif de La Bretonne had begun writing his memoirs as early as 1777, and the first eight parts were completed when he decided to publish them himself in 1794, as times were too uncertain for professional publishers to take on such a large-scale project. So it was that Restif printed the first eight volumes at home, on his own small clandestine press, with a print run of 450 copies. The subscription was not as successful as had been hoped, and the remaining eight parts were published in some 200 copies only, by Nicolas Bonneville and the widow Marisa-R., his own daughter. The announced prints were never published. We therefore present here the part printed by Restif and the beginning of the part printed by Bonneville. The collation of the introductory leaves of the first volume differs from copy to copy. Ours contains: a title (the only one included in the pagination) and 8 leaves. Missing is the leaf containing the subscription model and the catalog of works Restif intended to publish. A paperback copy, as issued, on orange dominoté paper. Missing one quire (vol. V, between pages 1444 and 1457) and 3 leaves (an introductory leaf in the first volume and, in volume X, the last leaf and f. fl6 (p. 2871/2872), the latter replaced by a manuscript leaf). Angular loss affecting a few letters, not serious, on 4 leaves.
