DAUMIER Honoré (1808-1879) - Lot 64
DAUMIER Honoré (1808-1879) Portrait charge dit "Le Hargneux" (presumed portrait of Marquis Charles Louis Huguet de Sémonville or P.-N Berryer dit Maréchal Soult) Bronze patina, numbered 14/25 and marked MLG, Barbedienne foundry Height: 15.5 cm Provenance : Private collection, acquired in the 1950s, then by descent Our bust belongs to the series of busts known as "Célébrité du Juste Milieu" made by Daumier between 1832 and 1835, caricaturing the main political figures of the early July Monarchy. These busts were modeled on the spot at the journalists' gallery in the Paris Chamber and, according to Chamfleury, enabled the artist to produce lithographs published in the newspaper La Caricature. The exact number of these busts is unknown; only 36 have survived and are preserved at the Musée d'Orsay, which purchased all the terracottas in 1980, including the original terracotta of our model. The bronze cast was made from the original terre crue by Barbedienne and published by Maurice Le Garrec, who had purchased the terre crue in 1927 from the heirs of Philipon, Director of La Caricature. Barbedienne's last cast was made in 1952, before the mold was handed over to Madame Le Garrec. Three more castings were made by Valsuani before the mold was destroyed in 1965. Barbedienne castings are marked MLG
