French school circa 1800 The Saint-Martin Gate Watercolor and pen 37 x 58.5 cm (view) The Porte Saint-Martin, in the 10th arrondissement of Paris, is a triumphal arch erected in 1674 by order of Louis XIV to celebrate his military victories. Standing 18 metres high, it is an emblem of French classicism and marks the historic entrance to the faubourg Saint-Martin. Often overlooked in favor of more famous monuments, it remains an important testimony to royal urban planning.
