PRUD'HON Pierre-Paul (1758-1823) - Lot 6
PRUD'HON Pierre-Paul (1758-1823) Profile portrait of Jean-Jacques Rousseau in a vignette project Black pencil and gray wash, captioned below the medallion: "Vitam impedere vero". Drawing: 10 x 6 cm - Sight: 16 x 11 cm Provenance : - Former Mahérault collection, his sale in May 1880, n°249, bought by Brame - Former Bellanger collection - Former Louis Michon collection - Former Félix Michon collection - In the family since Exhibition: - Prud'hon, Paris, May-June 1922, n°161 - Prud'hon, Paris, 1958, Musée Jacquemart-André Bibliography : - Jean Guiffrey, L'oeuvre de P.-P. Prud'hon, Paris, 1924, ed. Librairie Armand Colin, no. 1067 Under Rousseau's motto (meaning "to devote one's life to the truth"), Prud'hon depicted a scene from the Nouvelle Héloïse. Perhaps he was dissatisfied with the antique-style portrait engraved by Copia in the 1804 edition he illustrated, and imagined a more "realistic" portrait, in keeping with the philosopher's motto.
