PICABIA Francis (1879-1953) - Lot 14
PICABIA Francis (1879-1953) Transparency, Apollo Oil on board and pencil on paper, signed lower left Picabia and dated 1926 Inscribed on verso "Francis Picabia 1926". 81 x 50 on a total mount 95 x 63 cm Exhibitions : - Isetan Museum of Art,Tokyo, 1999 Provenance : - Private collection (1997-2007), of Thérèse Guilbert, Paris - Estate of Gérard Lenoir, friend of Olga Picabia Bibliography: Reproduced in the catalog raisonné "Francis Picabia catalog raisonné Volume III 1927-1939" page 256, inv 1963 A certificate of authenticity signed by Olga Picabia is enclosed. This mysterious drawing appears, according to the authors of the catalog raisonné, to have been executed in several stages, beginning with a relatively naturalistic female nude (which may correspond to the date on the verso), continuing with a highly shaded rendering of the Apollo from Belvedere (Cortile del Belvedere, Vatican Museums) and ending with a large, solemn head of a type common in Picabia's Transparencies around 1930. The signature at bottom left on the large black-painted cardboard support, which is indeed the artist's, may have been added after 1926. According to the authors of the catalog raisonné, the date is not in the artist's hand.
