CHOUKHAIEFF Vassili (1887-1973) - Lot 3
CHOUKHAIEFF Vassili (1887-1973) Female nude from behind Sanguine and pencil on paper, illegible inscriptions and stamp lower right (small tear upper left) 40 x 39 cm What could be more difficult to identify than a posterior! However, this Rubens-style drawing, treated in high-quality red ochre sanguine, sensual and dense, is by Vassili Choukhaïeff, who liked models with assertive curves. The full forms of this woman seem to correspond to the model on the right of the painting Les Baigneuses (Bathers), which attracted all eyes at the 1921 Paris exhibition of Le Monde de l'Art (Mir Iskousstva). This sanguine could be the verso of the recto of this model so often drawn and painted by the artist. Trained by Dimitri Kardovski at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg, Vassili Choukhaieff, accompanied by his second wife Vera, arrived in Paris in 1920, where he lived in a studio at 17 rue Campagne Première. Alexandre Iacovleff and Vassili Choukhaieff gave classes together and took part, along with other famous Russian artists, in the 1921 Art World exhibition at the Galerie La Boétie. Ill 2 V. Choukhaieff, LES BAIGNEUSES. No. 154 in the catalog of L'exposition du Monde de L'Art (Mir Iskousstva), Galerie la Boétie, Paris, 1921. Expert: Madame Caroline Haardt de la Baume
