BMW Motorcycles R51 500 cc 4-stroke flat twin, engineer Rudolf Schleicher 1939 Serial no. 61 20 47 Engine no. 8115 French collector's registration The motorcycle presented here was entirely restored by our collector some twenty years ago, and has since covered only 13 km. It is in perfect condition, but needs to be restarted. The R 51 model was produced between 1938 and 1940 in 3171 examples. It's a 500 cc rockered 4-speed gearbox with a double-cradle tubular frame. It developed 24 hp at 5,600 rpm and a top speed of 140 km/h. It is the successor to the R 5, from which it differs in particular through its sliding rear suspension. It was the first BMW to be equipped with rear-wheel suspension.
