Only 3171 examples of the R 51 were produced between 1938 and 1940.
The example presented here was fully restored by our collector in 1995, together with its side car. It has since covered 577 km.
The model R51 is equipped with a 500 cc rocker arm, 4-speed gearbox and double-cradle tubular frame.
It is the successor to the R 5, from which it differs in particular through its sliding rear suspension. It was the first BMW to feature rear-wheel suspension.
The bike on display was fully restored by our collector and finished in 1995, and has since covered just 577 km.
It runs perfectly.
It is equipped with a vintage STEIB sidecar. Model HS 501 M.
It cost the modest sum of 105,500 Fr, while a solex cost 33,000 Fr, and the least expensive of the 125s, the Peugeot 57 TA, sold for 99,600 Fr.
This one has also been restored, and features a trunk, soft top and windscreen.
A hood cover, when folded, and a tonneau cover.
