MOTO GUZZI - Lot 52
MOTO GUZZI Motorcycle Dondolino 500 cc stroke 4-stroke horizontal single-cylinder 1947 Frame no. 21961 Engine no. U63931 The motorcycle on display was purchased in Italy and restored in the 1980s, and our collector has taken part in 2 demonstrations with it. A restart will be necessary. The bike is in perfect condition. The 500 Dondolino was a genuine factory-built "compé-client", derived from the pre-war Condor. The "Dondolino" represented the resumption of the Moto Guzzi department's sporting activities after the long suspension caused by the Second World War. Although the country had been devastated and severely damaged by bombing, in many parts of Italy motorcycle races were held on improvised urban circuits, attended by crowds of spectators eager to return to normal life. The "Dondolino", thanks to its simple construction, could offer good performance, mechanical robustness and ease of maintenance. Aesthetically, it differed from the "Condor" only in the large rear mudguard designed to protect the rider from water splashes during long-distance races in the rain. The "Dondolino" owes its name to its ability to swing in a straight line at high speed. Hand-assembled to the highest quality standards in small batches of 25 to 50 bikes at a time by Moto Guzzi's racing department. Large-diameter magnesium hub, magneto ignition, oil-immersed multi-plate clutch and 4-speed gearbox capable of a good 170 kph for a weight of 128 kg. This made it the most popular 500 among post-war privateers in Italy, winning countless victories both on the track and in hill climbs.
