NSU - Lot 48
NSU Motorcycle Max 250 cc 4-stroke vertical single-cylinder 1956 Serial number 1829504 Engine no. 3223189 23402 Km French registration The motorcycle presented has been fully restored in early 2000 and is in perfect condition. It has not been ridden since. A restart will be necessary. NSU, founded in 1873, started out in the knitting machine industry, then switched to bicycles in 1886. It built its first motorcycle in 1900. The NSU Max appeared in 1952, and production began in 1953. It features a fabulous engine whose overhead camshaft is driven from the tail of the crankshaft by two long eccentric-mounted connecting rods set at 90 degrees, known as the Ultra Max-regulating valve, a system also used on a Jap engine and a Bentley 6-cylinder. A third connecting rod supports the camshaft bearing, transmitting expansion forces and ensuring the same valve clearance at all times. This historically unique, but also very expensive, system has the advantage of being silent, unadjustable and maintenance-free. With push-wheel front and swing-arm rear suspension. The girder frame is made of two stamped metal sheets welded together to give the bike its flowing lines. In competition, a prepared version of a production model took 10th place in the 1953 Spanish Grand Prix. NSU won the 250 World Championship title in 1953 and 1954, and was the first to break the 200 MPH barrier in the 250 class (322 km/h) in 1956. Even Mike HAILWOOD, Sammy MILLER and John SURTEES raced NSU 250s. The NSU Max shone in competitions all over Europe, on speed tracks and in major off-road events.
