When André Kiéné bought it in Italy, the seller certified that the bike had been Italian champion in 1960, but unfortunately we haven't found any documents to back this up.
The Aermacchi company was founded in 1913 by Giulio MACCHI under the name Società Anonima Nieuport-Macchi. It specialized in aeronautics and played an important role in the history of Italian aviation.
As well as designing seaplanes, fighters and military training aircraft, the company was involved in motorcycle manufacture from the 1950s through to the 1970s.
In April 1960, Harley-Davidson took control of Aermacchi and the factory was moved a few kilometers to Schiranna near Varese.
The brand name became Aermacchi Harley-Davidson, then AMF Harley-Davidson until 1978, when the factory was sold to the CASTIGLIONI brothers, who developed their own brand: Cagiva.
The 250 Ala d'Oro "golden wing" was first launched as a 175cc sports model in 1957.
It scored so many victories in Italian races that a 250cc version appeared in 1960.
