A. J. S. - Lot 38
A. J. S. Moto 7R Boy Racer 350 cc 4-stroke vertical single-cylinder 1961 Engine no.: 4746 Frame no.: 4746 BV n°: 4746 The motorcycle presented is an ex-rider Bob Mc INTYRE then Georges MONNERET. It's an old restoration, and needs to be restarted. It is in excellent condition, matching number, with the BV6 Schaffeitner. After winning many competitions with these "Big Port" tumblers in the '20s, AJS used it in the Tourist Trophy in 1927, and its first overhead camshaft gave it 3rd place in the 350. 7 is the AJS name for 350, and R for Racing. In 1938, the 7R name was taken up again in 1949, when a new customer competition, dubbed the Boy Racer, was launched. The long-stroke engine remained virtually unchanged. Only the chassis evolved over the years. The engine develops 28 hp at 6,700 rpm, with a chain-driven overhead camshaft. With a 4-speed gearbox, it achieves around 165 km/h. Produced from 1948 to 1962. Bob Mc INTYRE is a Scottish racing driver. In 1957, he was the first driver to achieve an average speed of 160 km/h in the Tourist Trophy. He won the motorcycle Grand Prix 5 times, with 3 victories in the Tourist Trophy and 4 in the North West 200. Georges MONNERET is a French rider. He won 499 victories and 183 world records, including almost 80 before the war, and competed for 32 seasons on 2 wheels over 38 years. Before the war, he owned a large motorcycle and cycle store in Montrouge, near Paris. He finished second in the Spa 24-hour race in 1938 on a Delage D6-70 and second in the Le Mans 24-hour race in 1939 on a Delage D6-3L. He raced again at Le Mans in 1951 and 1954 in a Gordini, and won the Coupe d'Automne in the 2-liter category at Monthléry in a Maserati A6GS. He also raced outboards, winning his first Spekels Trophy in 1936. He founded his own Motocycles Mondial-Monneret brand in 1965. He set up a moped driving school for teenagers on the island of Puteaux near Paris. His children also raced motorcycles, with some fine results. This vintage photo, from the Fond de dotation pour le Patrimoine du Sport Motocycliste, shows Pierre MONNERET with number 29, Georges MONNERET with number 28 and Jean MONNERET with number 30 on AJS at the Coupes du Salon in Montlhéry. The motorcycle on display has been authenticated by one of Georges' children, and is equipped with the famous and very rare Schaffeitner 6-speed gearbox, which was used to produce the report on the presentation of this gearbox in moto Revue number 1622 of 1962. This was the bike used for the report and test in Moto Revue no. 1622, December 1962. It was with this bike that André Kiéné took part in the first AFAMAC races.
