MV AUGUSTA - Lot 30
MV AUGUSTA
Motorcycle
Squale
175 cc
4-stroke vertical single-cylinder
1951
The bike was bought restored in the 1990s by our collector in Italy.
It has not been ridden since, and will need to be restarted.
The 175 Squalo is one of those machines that built the brand's sporting legend.
A true "customer-competitor" produced in around 200 examples between 1954 and 1957, the "Squalo" (shark) is a rare machine.
The 175 single-cylinder single camshaft was installed in a chassis closely derived from official racing machines.
The rules in this category prohibited MV's sophisticated double overhead cam racing engine, so the Squalo was powered by an improved version of the 175 cm3 single-cam engine of the touring version, but with a 5-speed gearbox.
The frame was fitted with an Earles fork.
Oversized drum brakes (180 mm at the front and 150 mm at the rear) kept the performance of this superb machine, rated at 150 km/h, in check!
Renowned for its robustness, speed and beauty, the 175 Squalo was very popular throughout Europe.
Riders such as Derek Minter and Mike Hailwood won numerous races on it in 175 cm3 and even 250 cm3 with re-bored engines.
The Squalo was primarily intended for Italian Formula racing, but it soon dominated the 200 cm3 class in the UK and elsewhere, despite a higher list price than a Manx Norton! In fact, it was one of these little MVs, downsized to 196 cm3, that gave the great Mike HAILWOOD his very first race victory, at Oulton Park in 1957.
