GILERA - Lot 27
GILERA Moto Saturno 500 cc 4-stroke 1950 Engine number 2610714 Engine number 26174 French registration The bike was fully restored some twenty years ago and has been ridden very little since. It will need to be restarted. A large set of parts is included. The Gilera Saturno was first presented at the Milan Motor Show in 1938, the single-cylinder tumbled engine was designed by Guiseppe SALMAGGI according to the established standards of the time, in addition to having clean lines, most components were easily removable without taking the engine out of the frame. Main production lasted from 1946 to 1958. During this period, only 6000 Saturnos were produced. During its production years, four types were available: "touring", "sport", "competition" and "racing". The Saturno was equipped with a parallelogram fork and an unusual rear suspension. Designed by Guiseppe GILERA in 1934, it featured vertical levers compressing horizontal springs enclosed in tubes integrated into the frame. The rear of these tubes had another set of springs for rebound damping. A set of adjustable friction dampers was connected between the rear end of the fork and the rear of the tubes containing the springs. This was quite a sophisticated design, since most motorcycles of the time had no rear suspension at all. The Saturno remained virtually unchanged until 1951, when the front forks became telescopic. In 1952, a new rear suspension system with a more modern swingarm and twin telescopic shock absorbers was introduced. The Saturno engine produced 22 hp at 5000 rpm, giving a top speed of 135 km/h.
