JONGHI - Lot 21
JONGHI Motorcycle TJ4 Racing 350 cc 4-stroke vertical single-cylinder 1932 Engine no. 4136 The motorcycle presented here is a racing version, an old quality restoration for which a restart will be necessary. Created in 1930 in the Paris suburbs by Argentine financier Tijo JONGHI, who gave his initials to the TJ4. He teamed up with engineer Giuseppe REMONDINI, who came from the Alfa Romeo racing department and had also been technical director at 2 Italian motorcycle manufacturers, FRERA as well as NAGAS and RAY. The 350s of the latter brand were simply renamed Jonghi. The TJ4's success was to come. First in the Rome Grand Prix and winner of the 1932 Bol d'Or. World record holder in 1933, the 24h covered at an average speed of 116.78km/h, with great French champions Louis JEAN-NIN, REMONDONI fils and Georges MONNERET. Race victories attracted a demanding sporting clientele, and the brand went so far as to guarantee the speed of its machines. Following financial problems, the brand joined forces with Prester in 1933. The company survived after the war by manufacturing a 125 4-stroke ABC and a scooter. The brand disappeared in 1956. It used a rigid double-cradle frame with a single-cylinder 350 cm3 3-speed tumbled engine rated at 135 km/h with 17 hp at 5800 rpm. Between 1931 and 1938, around 800 side- or tumble-engined motorcycles were produced.
