IMN (Industry Mechanica de Napoli) - Lot 20
IMN (Industry Mechanica de Napoli) Moto Rocket Prototype 200 cc Flatwin 4-stroke overhead camshaft 1957 Serial no.: 47M20H717F French collector's registration This extremely rare motorcycle, believed to be one of the last in existence, has been exchanged by our collector for a Norton 350 Inter. Based in Baïa near Naples, the first company, which initially manufactured torpedoes, was razed to the ground following the war. The new company IMN "Industria Méccanica, Napoletana" made a name for itself in 1950 with a moped, the Paperino, powered by a 38 cm3 Mosquito engine. Everything changed when one of the most famous engineers in Italian motorcycle history, Carlo GIANNINI, joined IMN. In 1934, together with REMO, he presided over the creation of the "Rondine" for CNA, which became the first four-cylinder Grand Prix Gilera. He moved on to MOTO GUZZI, where he created the record-breaking Tarf with Piero TARUFFI, followed by the four-cylinder in-line and long Grand Prix model in 1952. Then, for MV AGUSTA, he created a 300 cm3 twin-cylinder 2ACT. At IMN, he made two remarkable motorcycles, but far too sophisticated to be profitable. Presented at the Milan Motor Show in 1956, their price made them an ultra-confidential production, which led IMN to file for bankruptcy in 1958, but was taken over by Finmeccanica. The design is based on a 200 cm3, four-stroke, tumbled flat twin with a bevel gearbox housed in a streamlined crankcase. The engine and swingarm are suspended and articulated under a tubular trellis frame. It develops 11 hp at 6,000 rpm, with a four-speed gearbox giving a good 120 km/h.
