MOTO GUZZI - Lot 14
MOTO GUZZI Motorcycle Guzzino 65 cc 2-stroke horizontal single-cylinder 1953 Frame: 21140015 Engine: 21140015 To be registered as a collector's item. The model presented here is an old quality restoration that has seen very little use since, so it will need to be restarted. The new Guzzi is mechanically very simple: Controls are few and within easy reach. The 63.7 cm3 two-stroke engine delivers 2 HP, enough to push the bike's 45 kg to 50 km/h. In 1946, a few mechanical changes were made (a ring to support the crankshaft, primary transmission with helical gears, more clutch plates). The 65 Mandello was an immediate commercial success. In fact, many raced with the little Guzzi, including a young Umberto MASETTI, who took it to victory at Reggio Emilia in 1947. In 1948 the Guzzino, as it came to be known, underwent a number of changes, including an electric horn, a fuel filler cap and a new muffler. The following year saw more changes: the swingarm was strengthened, while the lamp control was moved to the handlebars, the rear light was modified and the pinion cover increased. 1949 was also the year of a major gathering organized by Moto Guzzi for "Guzzino" owners on June 5 at Mandello del Lario. 14,257 people, riding 12,660 Guzzini, from all regions of Italy and the world, to achieve the world record for the number of participants and vehicles of the same make and model. Also in 1949, Moto Guzzi signed an agreement with the Spanish company, Moteur Hispanie, to produce the motoleggera Mandello under license in the Iberian Peninsula. The "Guzzino" was used in various competitions, both in Italy and abroad. Among the most important victories are those obtained in the 75 cc class by Alberto CESAR, the Enzo Rippa Milano- Taranto 1950 and 1951 and the Italian Gymkhana Champion title obtained from Casadei in Erio 1953. Moto Guzzi enters the "Guzzino" in several record attempts. The first took place on February 28, 1948, on the Charrat-Saxon road in Switzerland, when Raffaele ALBERTI achieved the kilometer and mile record, both standing and thrown, for the 75 class. On November 5, 1949, at the Autodrome di Monza, ALBERTI, Gianni LEONI and Bruno RUFFO conquered 19 world records for the same class. On September 14, 1950, ALBERTI, LIONS and RUFFO set a new session record at the Montlhéry circuit, improving or winning 24 world records, including the kilometer run at 96 km/h and the 1000 kilometer run at 75.6 km/h. Production of the "Guzzino" ended in 1954, after 71,534 units had been built, when it was replaced by the Goldfinch, closely derived from it.
