Pilgrim's flask, fiasca schicciata, in historiato polychrome - Lot 212
Pilgrim's flask, fiasca schicciata, in historiato polychrome majolica. Of piriform form, it illustrates on both sides the siege of a fortress in Antiquity, with soldiers forming a tortoise on one side; handles in the shape of a satyr's head with coiled horns; pedestal with two loops. Italy, copy of a gourd in the Bargello, probably Ginori, circa 1855/70 Height: 39.8; Width: 24.5 cm (one handle missing, stopper stuck) This hitherto unpublished flask is one of the reproductions of a 16th-century Urbino fiasca in the Bargello. All these reproductions are now attributed to a 19th-century Italian ceramist by the name of Ginori, who affixed his name to one of them. Ginori is thought to have produced numerous copies for the exhibition of the authentic model at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence between 1854 and 1855. Several of these copies are known to be in public or private collections, including one that belonged to the Damiron collection (Sale Paris, Hôtel Drouot, Me. Desbenoit, June 11, 2018, lot 43), another at Christie's (New York, June 7, 2012, lot 191), and yet another at the Musée National de la Renaissance in Ecouen (inv. EC80). Book consulted: O. Rucellai, The Revival of ItalianMaiolica:Ginori and Cantagalli, Firenze, 2011, p. 170-171, n°6.
