Candlestick, Mamluk Egypt, late 15th century - Lot 140
Candlestick, Mamluk Egypt, late 15th century Hammered copper alloy, truncated cone-shaped base marked with two raised rings, concave shoulder in the center from which a cylindrical wick extends. Engraved decoration on the whole of epigraphic cartridges in Arabic thuluth alternating with tripartite coats of arms decorated from top to bottom with a rhombic napkin, then a cup decorated with a writing case flanked by two powder horns, finally a small cup. Geometric friezes and foliage complete the set. Height. 33 ; Diam. base : 30 cm (shocks, accidents to the neck, upper part of the wick missing, traces of golden patina added later) (accidents and restoration to the neck) As is often the case on Islamic metals, the inscriptions in Arabic praise the patron: the neck, for example, repeats twice the formula "al-maqarr al-ashraf al-'ali" / "his Excellency, most noble and high". The combination of the six heraldic motifs visible on the repeated blazon of this candlestick is found on the works of several amirs in the service of the Burjite sultan al-Ashraf Qa'itbay (r. 1468-96). It is found on numerous textile pieces such as a carpet in the Textile Museum in Washington (no. 1965.49.1) and on metals such as a tray kept at the Egyptian Embassy in Washington (no. 15944). Bibliography: Atil, Esin, Renaissance of Islam: Art of the Mamluks. Washington, D.C.: Smithsonian Institution Press, 1981. pp 108-109 and 240-241 Claimed
