Silk Ghiordhes carpet (warp, weft and silk pile), Turkey, ci - Lot 243
Silk Ghiordhes carpet (warp, weft and silk pile), Turkey, circa 1920 (*) 1.71 x 1.21 m The carpet is decorated with an ivory mihrab surmounted by two columns on an ivory background with geometric motifs. The wide red border with "jamina" motifs surrounds the composition. Good condition "In the 17th and 18th centuries, in the Ghiordhes factories, prayer rugs with geometric motifs were produced, linked to the iconography of the Ottoman court. In the second half of the 19th century, the Ghiordhes factories gradually abandoned traditional production, adopting French-influenced Mejid-style decorative designs and, later, gracefully curved "prayer" compositions closer to the tastes of Western buyers. The chromatic range used until then also underwent variations: golden tones of yellow, ochre or fuchsia pink were introduced.
