CHAPU Henri (1833-1891) The Thought Original made in 1877. High relief in bronze with a medal patina, signed H. CHAPU on the side. Edition between 1898 and 1905. Bears the mark of the founder " Thiébaut Frères / Fumière et Gavignot Srs / Paris ". Height. 73,5 ; Width : 61,5 cm, on a red marble base Comparative work: - Henri Chapu, La Pensée, Monument de la comtesse d'Agoult, dite Daniel Stern, marble. H. 2 m 30 x W. 1 m 45, Paris, Père-Lachaise cemetery. Henri Chapu made monumental funerary sculpture his specialty. Our bronze is a reduction of the sepulchral monument of the woman of letters Marie de Flavigny, Countess d'Agoult, known as Daniel Stern, erected in Père Lachaise in 1877. La Pensée is allegorically represented as a richly draped young woman. In the background is a stele bearing a bust of Athena, goddess of the arts and thought, unlike the original work which featured a bust of Goethe. The founder's mark " Thiébaut Frères / Fumière et Gavignot Srs / Paris " places the realization of our work between 1898, date at which Victor Thiébaut gives to two employees his publishing fund and the right to use the name " Thiébaut Frères ", and 1905, year of the departure of Gavignot accident.
